My Journey from Güvercinlik (pigeon-loft) – Trafalgar Square’
Güvercinlik (pigeon-loft) is the name given by Turkish arrivals to Trafalgar Square, London during the 1940’s, where Turks (Turkish Cypriots) used to meet. This was their one and only meeting point out of necessity as they did not have any associations, café’s or restaurants of their own in which to congregate and to socialise. This part of my exhibition ‘My Journey from Güvercinlik (pigeon-loft) – Trafalgar Square’ which formed part of London Turks exhibition, which was exhibited in many venues including at the Greater London Authority-City Hall in 2006, in the European Parliament-Brussels in 2007 and in Lewisham in 2008. The displays are photographs of Turkish Cypriots on diverse range of subjects such as celebrations, society balls, family, work, relations, entertainment, recreation, education and political activities between UK, Cyprus and Turkey. The photographs of some prominent Turkish and Turkish Cypriot politicians over the years were hosted and invited in London by the Turkish Cypriot Community.
