 The Cyprus Turkish Association ever since 1951 has helped to disseminate information on education, immigration, housing and other social issues of the time, to the wider community by raising their awareness with the support of key figures from the world of politics primarily form Cyprus and Turkey. The Association attracted some of the most talented individuals such as the Nobel Peace Prize nominee Osman Türkay amongst its members and active supporters. The Cyprus Turkish Association was established in Soho, London. The author worked over several years in the archives of the Association and compiled the book – ‘The First Turkish Association in Europe–Cyprus Turkish Association’. The CTA has its office and building at the heart of London in Soho and prides itself as self-help and resilient organization that has kept the torch of harmony and integration burning despite the many challenges:

The book ‘Kıpırtı Yazıları’ was authored especially for children and contains some 40 essays on various subjects, from ‘Mother’s Day’ to ‘ William Shakespeare’ and ‘Unicef’ and ‘Children Rights’ It aims to guide children and present ‘learning and reading books’ as a way of life to them. ‘Kıpırtı Yazıları’ is among very few books in Turkey that were written as a compilation of essays for children:

 The word ‘Gurbet’ translated means ‘There is no more a place far from home’. ‘Gurbet’ has always been used to define the Turkish people living in Europe and continues to be used to define them today. The word has been used in all aspects in formal to informal settings, from government officials to journalists to poets, to entrepreneur’s and to writers to describe Turks in Europe.

This was the motivation to commence this research in order to highlight the meaning, history and the reason behind ‘Gurbet’, which still retains it’s true and original meaning amongst the Turkish people living across Europe.

The book is a unique insight into the lives of diverse Turkish women living in London, through their own word and pictures expressing their thoughts on ‘Gurbet’:

Turks in London – The Unheard Voices

The book is a completion of interviews of Turkish people living and working in London. People have talked of their journey, experience, belonging, identity, exclusions, happiness & sorrow and being Londoner’s.

People have been interviewed form many faiths including people from Jewish, Armenian, Kurdish, Alevi and Sunni background. This work gives voice to men, women, old, young, married, divorced, academics, artists, shop-owner’s, politicians, teachers, workers, business people, students and people from all different walks of life. The author has attempted to give a voice to as many people from the diverse sections of Turkish community across London.
