‘Twenty Poems on Love’ by Pablo Neruda

“I can write the saddest lines tonight.
Write for example: ‘The night is fractured
and they shiver, blue, those stars, in the distance’

The night wind turns in the sky and sings.
I can write the saddest lines tonight.
I loved her, sometimes she loved me too.”

As nearly the whole world is looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day, I thought for some romantics who want to mark the day with intense love should read Pablo Neruda’s ‘Twenty Poems on Love’.

Poetry lovers would know that Pablo Neruda’s poems have the intensity and describe sensual passion. His love poems are packed with explicit sexuality and mirrors passionate relationships. The poem touches the reader with sincerity of love and the beauty within.

The unity of mind and body which envelopes unconditional love in Neruda’s poetry is not to be turned out only on Valentine’s Day, but certainly should be a book for every day reading.

But of course for people who see and feel love not only on Valentine’s Day but every day.

“On nights like these, I held her in my arms.
I kissed her greatly under the infinite sky.

She loved me, sometimes I loved her too.
How could I not have loved her huge, still eyes?

I can write the saddest lines tonight.
To think I don’t have her, to feel I have lost her.”
