Media Moguls and Manipulation

It is no coincidence that the man who held the job as the head of communications for David Cameron for almost four years has ditched his job in the midst of pending court cases against journalists employed by Rupert Murdoch and Andy Coulson, when he was the editor on the News of the World newspaper. The heat has been turned on by a number of former and serving MPs along with a string of celebrities.

The allegations, if true, could unwind the desire of Rupert Murdoch to add another string to the long list of media interest to his international media empire and that of total control of the biggest single source of entertainment and news beside the BBC and that of Sky Television. The prize is enormous and one that is almost but guaranteed in the current political climate.

Some allege Andy Coulson may have become news himself  but the reality may be different if you are to believe the sources close to the Tory Party; in that it is News International interest that are being protected by trying to defuse the focus on the News of the World phone hacking scandal. Rupert Murdoch cannot afford, it is alleged, to have his bid to control Sky by this constant gaze of the media, to be scuppered and have the bid referred to the competition authorities.

One wonders, if this were to be true, then will they not just rubber stamp what in many eyes is already a sham situation. Where the person presiding over the Sky bid – Jeremy Hunt, is already on the record of supporting it before he was landed with the challenge by accident. That resulted the Business Secretary Vince Cable being stripped of his powers to preside over the decision as a consequence of his actions of publically speaking to undercover journalists about his private intentions on the bid.

What may come undone in the process is the judgement of both David Cameron and George Osbourne as the key people who appointed Andy Coulson as the Tory chief spin doctor in 2007.

What other revelations will follow? What is sure to come out will be how the Metropolitan Police has been found wanting over their handling and alleged pace of the investigations’ of the phone hacking of key politicians and public figures. It is also no coincidence to note that one of the key senior officers responsible for investigating the phone hacking of public figures  has ended up on the payroll of Rupert Murdoch. There are lot more questions that will be raised in the coming weeks and months as new information surfaces. It’s sure to be one big blockbuster of film plot –  I am sure the executives at 20th Century Fox, part of the vast Rupert Murdoch empire, are already busy writing the script of the movie  that is bound to follow!
